Project 3
Wood (Movement vs. Implied Movement)
This project is a relatively open assignment, where you will have good amount of freedom in what you decide to make. You will be creating a non-functional sculptural form with movement or implied movement(s). You may also incorporate any political or personal agenda that you are interested in, as long as it works with your sculptural concept of movement. One of the main objectives of this assignment is acquiring knowledge and experience in building a large wooden structure. Meaning, you will be expected to spend a lot of time in the studio getting familiar with all the wood tools. The form has a requirement of that you have to use all of your material. There will be safety demonstrations for all the wood tools necessary to complete this project, and limited materials will be provided. Everyone should bring in 3 sketches and one model for next class. Each of the sketches must fill one page with supporting writing for a clear understanding of the sketch.
Objectives:
• Gain a clear understanding of the processes and tools involved in wood-working
• Learn ways to develop your sketches/ideas to create “movement” in your work
• Make a work that flows/moves within itself using provided techniques
• Investigate wood-working in contemporary sculpture
• Problem solve using hands on approach to creating 3D form
• Create artistic style while using raw building materials to build form
Considerations:
• Consider capabilities and limitations of wood, balance, weight, stability, size, amount of material needed, -how the form will be assembled (screw, nail, staple, and/or glue)
• Consider how every choice and material will affect the physical/ visible outcome
• Consider the implications and circumstances of “movement”
• Consider final piece with paint/stain and presentation at critique
• Consider natural/unnatural ways of using wood
• Consider variety of shapes within one form
• Consider view from all sides of the final work
• Manage and spend your work time wisely
Formal elements to integrate:
Composition, surface texture, line, form, positive space, negative space, scale changes, tonal shifts, color, rhythm, repetition.
Provided Materials:
• One 4’x8’ plywood board
• Two to three 2”x4”s
• Two to three 1”x4”s
• Wood Glue
• Nails, staples
• Limited amount of finishing material (Shellac, Paste wax)
